Frank West, a freelance photojournalist seeking the scoop of a lifetime, follows a promising lead to a small suburban town only to discover it's being overrun by zombies! He flees to the local shopping mall hoping it will offer safety, but finds it far from secure. Survival becomes a desperate struggle against endless waves of enemies, yet with full access to an entire shopping center, Frank can use anything to fight the flesh-hungry horde and uncover the truth behind this devastating epidemic.

This action horror game gives new meaning to the concept of "retail hell." Dead Rising employs a dynamic real-time system where time passes whether Frank is active or stationary. For instance, while zombies move slowly during daylight hours, they become stronger and faster after dark, making nighttime survival even more challenging. The unprecedented swarms arrive in continuous waves and feature a diverse population. These former humans retain some memories of their past lives, reflected in their behavior and appearance. The mall's variety of stores provides an endless supply of resources including vehicles, improvised weapons, and more. Other survivors appear throughout the journey, and helping them can yield valuable clues about what has occurred.
