About This Game

Niche is a fresh mix of turn-based strategy, simulation, and roguelike mechanics. You must shape your own species of animals that resemble foxes, bears, cats, or dogs using authentic genetics. Keep your pack alive against dangers like illness, hunger, weather changes, and hostile creatures. If your species goes extinct, the game ends, and you must begin your evolution again. Key features include a living, dynamic world to test survival skills, a breeding system based on real genetics, over 100 genes to shape your species, and procedurally generated worlds and animals. Explore five biomes featuring unique predators, prey, and flora. The game mechanics are inspired by population genetics. Inspirations include Spore, Don't Starve, The Creatures Series, and Warrior Cats. Educationally, the game introduces scientific mechanics of genetics such as dominant-recessive and co-dominant inheritance. It also covers the five pillars of population genetics: genetic drift, genetic flow, mutation, natural selection, and sexual selection, all woven directly into the gameplay mechanics.
