In Overture, magic possesses the power to cure every physical ailment but fails to heal the mind. Society casts aside those with incurable mental illnesses, confining these "lunatics" to madhouses until they potentially regain their sanity. Yet, no one faces a more severe affliction than thirteen-year-old Janis, who stands alone in a city of magic users due to her inability to cast spells—a condition termed "Magic Deficiency Disorder." This disability makes her a prime target for torment, though she continues to resist until she is rescued from her tormentors by Aidan Woolf, a formidable mage and police commander. Janis comes to view Woolf as a father figure, but the commander has not come solely for a friendly visit; he is on a mission from the king.
