About This Game
East Asia in the sixteenth century is a region in chaos. In Japan, the Shogun family has lost authority, leading to civil war as local lords expand their power. Korea's Joseon dynasty is crippled by internal court conflict, while China's Ming dynasty is weakening due to rebellions and foreign attacks. These domestic disputes escalate into a three-nation international war.
Sengoku Jidai: Shadow of the Shogun is a turn-based strategy and tactics game set during this era, focusing mainly on the Japanese Warring States period and the Japanese Invasion of Korea. It also includes other East Asian armies to simulate different regional conflicts.
Take charge of diverse armies with unique tactical doctrines. Guide your forces and generals to victory in historical battles or "what-if" skirmishes against AI or human foes. Pursue regional domination through the operational campaign layer, where you manage the consequences of battles. To become Shogun, overthrow the Emperor, or build a Pan-Asian Empire, you must master the battlefield. In this time of turmoil, Asia is yours to conquer.
Features:
- Accurate simulation of 16th and 17th-century East Asian warfare, specifically the Sengoku Jidai and Imjin War.
- A unique graphic style inspired by Japanese art.
- Historical scenarios featuring key engagements of the period.
- A campaign mode allowing you to rewrite history. Manage terrain, supply, attrition, sieges, and economic damage. Strategic decisions affect available forces, while battle results influence unit strength, experience, and elan.
- Classic turn-based, tile-based gameplay.
- An interface that is easy to use but gameplay that is hard to master.
- Battalion-sized units.
- Named generals who impact unit morale and combat, and can duel enemy commanders.
- Single player and multiplayer modes.
- A skirmish system creating unlimited "what-if" scenarios with realistic armies on generated terrain. Armies include Japanese clans, Ikko Ikki, Wokou Pirates, Joseon Korean, Ming Chinese, rebels, Mongols, and Manchu, with lists covering the 16th and 17th centuries.
- Randomly generated skirmish scenarios including open battles, defensive stands, flank marches, and reinforcement missions.
- Options to pick armies manually or let the computer choose.
- Effective AI with custom behaviors for historical battles.
- Six difficulty levels to scale the challenge.
- Varied unit organizations and doctrines representing tactical developments of the period.
- A mod-friendly system with a built-in map editor.
- Multiplayer mode for historical and "what-if" scenarios via Slitherine’s PBEM server.
